Very enjoyable game once you have got the hang of it. I thought at first it was a little boring, but had not got the full picture.

Professor Layton truly caught me off guard. My bosses at GameStop recommended that I at least look into this game, because I will admit, I was mildly interested at best. The thought of a puzzle game really didn't appeal to me much at all. Much to my surprise this game is much more than just your average puzzle game.
Layton takes you through the eyes of himself and his sidekick apprentice Lucas, who are expert puzzle decrypters. While receiving an invite to the prestigious manner in a small village, a series of events start to occur, and it is up to you and Lucas to figure it out. All the while, the village happens to be very fond of puzzles, and will no sooner give you one before ever handing you any information pertaining to what they know.
These puzzles are not your run of the mill puzzles, as they require you to think outside of the box. Some of the answers will seem extremely obvious until you answer it and find that it's wrong. The game wagers picarats for each puzzle. You get the most for getting the answer right on your first try, but will slowly lose those as you answer incorrectly. You are allowed three hints per puzzle, assuming you have the coin to pay for them. The picarats are used as a measurement of your score at the end of the game.
There are a few side events that go on as well, but for the most part, the story is straight forward. Exploration is done using the lower half of the touch screen, and menu navigation is simple. If you like to use your head, and are up for a good challenge, this game is at least worth a play.

This puzzle game had me scratching my head fairly often. I tend to be a persistent kind of person, so if puzzle stumped me, I kept chugging away on it until I finally finished it. Overall, it took me about 16 hours to beat the game because some of the later puzzles got wicked hard. There are walk-throughs online though if you ever get totally stumped, which I did twice...mostly because I was unable to interpret exactly what a puzzle was wanting me to do.
I did have to use a fair amount of hints in order to get through the game. Finding hint coins and hidden puzzles is a tap fest that can get a bit frustrating at times. But despite needing to hit a walk-through for a couple of puzzles, and disagreeing with the interpretation I was supposed to figure out for a couple of the riddle type puzzles, I still give this game an overall score of 4. It kept me coming back for more. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I liked it so much, I immediately opted to buy the next installment, Diabolical Box.

I bought this as my daughter's birthday gift, she loves it, sometimes it is too difficult for her to solve the puzzle, she will ask me to help, glad to have a chance to play with my daughter and I love puzzle too. It is a fun game !

Played and finnished in a decent time.
Works well with the DS.

If you are expecting a great detective story, look somewhere else. I felt this is too predictable and plain.
I thought some of the quizzes are too rubbish to be considered quizzes.
Finding hint coins is cumbersome especially the same call-outs pop up all the time when you click the background.
Overall, you can reach the ending with no problem and it is a pretty short game.
I was a little bit disappointed but it was good game.

Since I enjoy puzzle games, I really enjoyed this one and finished it in a couple of days.

I bought this Professor Layton and the Curious Village because I like puzzles and it was featured on a TV commercial geared at adult Nintendo DS owners (like me). I was originally going to purchase the other "Professor Layton" game at the same time and then thought better of it and I am glad that I didn't.
I like puzzle games, but this one was strange. I seemed that right off the bat, some puzzles were very frustrating and the "hints were NOT THAT helpful. With usual puzzle games the first few are really easy and then the puzzles become gradually harder and harder. With THIS more difficult more toward the beginning with a very few easy ones thrown in. I reached the door to the Mansion and for some reason I went back to the town center for some reason and the game made me do the in between puzzles all over again. If I had solved one by dumb luck the first time, I was faced with the same puzzle again.
I seems to be better with the easier ones at the beginning so that you don't get "stuck" and you can't proceed further at all.
My husband just bought me the new Nintendo DS XL for my birthday and I will attempt to try the game again on the much larger screen.
I would not reccomend this game, unless you have the patience of a SAINT, which I don't!!!

This is an excellent brain teasing exercise for all ages - from teenagers to oaps!!

this is such a good ds game - far more interesting and brain-exercising than most others. my 12 year old loved it and we have bought it for 2 friends already. much recommended, and have just bought the sequel

My brother got this game for his 11th birthday but I just can't put it down! It has a lovely storyline at the centre! The puzzles can be challenging but thats part of the fun! I would recomend it to anyone however you do have to read the puzzles so for younger children it can be a struggle!

Will keep this short. The game is easy to use, very clear instructions. It's quite addictive, and stretches the brain so whilst it's fun it does give your lateral thinking a work out. The puzzels range from maths, common sense and practical. There's something for everyone in this. I'd recommend it.

As the title says, Professor Layton and the Curious Village is a well executed game. You don't really need to go far to see the high ratings that the Professor Layton Series have attained. The game is pretty much a bunch of puzzles all tied in to a charming storyline. A must buy for puzzle and brainteaser lovers. Animation is wonderful and unique, voice acting is outstanding and well fitting. I'd type more but I wouldn't want to spoil the game. Great for adults, too. There are far too many reviews raving about this game, so "buy it" is all the effective advice I can give.

I absolutely loved this game!!!! I played it as much as I could the first few days. And that was it because it ended soooo fast! I wanted it to keep going. I'm really disappointed that it provided about 8 hours of play. And its not a game you can play again. Borrow it or buy it used because for the money it doesn't provide a lot of hours of enjoyment. But do play it because it is my all time favorite ds game!

All the details have been given in other reviews, so I'd just like to say it is EXCELLENT!!!
As a player in my late 20s, this game is giving me hours of entertainment and making my brain work plenty!
Very recommendable!

I LOVE THIS GAME. IT IS FULL OF HIDDEN PUZZLES OF VARYING DEGREES OF DIFFICULTY WHICH YOU UNEARTH AS YOU MAKE YOUR WAY THROUGH THE VILLAGE. VERY ADDICTIVE AND WITH ROOM TO SAVE THREE GAMES, YOU CAN TRY TO BEAT OTHER PEOPLES PROGRESS.

I think the Professor Layton series will become a great set of games.
The puzzles are a curious mix of mathematical (of all forms), Logic and visual. There are plenty of puzzles to do (around 130) but you do find that they are samey. However, the deeper you go into the game they harder they get, and you might find yourself looking for a hint.
Definately makes you want to play more to solve the story, and get to the next puzzle.

I would be leaving for an overseas trip and needed something to occupy my time for 14hrs; A friend of mine recommended this game to me. I am a 29 yr old college grad, who found this game challenging (in a good way). The way in which you play takes a little getting used too, but manageable. The games themselves are very logic based, and can be often be quite tricky. It's a lot of fun though AND makes you think. One thing I didn't like was the talking that the characters do and you can't stop them. And EVERYTHING is a puzzle. If you approach a man en route to somewhere and need directions, for example, you will have to SOLVE A PUZZLE first in order to get that answer. Every character is like this, but I guess that's the way the game goes. Believe it or not, it has helped me a lot in life. There were many times when I was in a jam of some sort, and due to the training of this game, I was able to problem solve much more efficiently that before. This game took me 21 hours to complete, and I highly recommend it.

Enjoyable game, extra downloadable puzzles a good extra, 'Secret Door' accessed by getting a password from the next game, Pandora's Box, could have been better. Don't panic rushing out to buy next game just for that, but worth getting as it lives up to this game in fun.

SHORT REVIEW:
This game was great. The presentation was well done using a quaint art style, good voice acting and nice video cutscenes. The game is 9/10ths logic and reading puzzles and 1/10th thinking about the plot and what the story is. Think of this as Brain Age with a cool plot that makes Professor Layton and the Curious Village hard to put down. This will be almost certainly a single-playthrough game, despite having plenty of extra puzzles and some bonus content. I would recommend this game if you have a non-driving role in a long road trip or flight/train ride somewhere.

I can't say much more than, this is the best game I think I have ever played in the video game realm. It has a story line, a level of mystery, funny dialogue, Awesome and challenging puzzles that will keep you intrigued. It has a little bit of everything. I am quite busy and have little time for playing "games" but I could not put this one down till I "finished" it. It took me about 2 weeks of everyday play to get all the way through. Can't wait to get the next in the series, something about a "diabolical box". :) You won't go wrong with this game!

I bought 'Professor Layton and the Curious Village' for our son at Christmas because it looked to be something completely different from other games on the market--and I was right! This game is both challenging and fun, but totally above other video games on the fun scale. In order to advance through the game, you must think through and answer various puzzles and brain teasers; some simple, others not so easy. We played this game while travelling in the car during a long road trip; it proved to be a very thought-provoking and entertaining game, keeping us busy for several hours.

I was getting a bit bored with my Ds and hadn't been on it for quite sometime. Then I discoverd this game and I was hooked! A good range of puzzles with useful hints if needed. Good story to go along with.... bought the next version already!

I bought this game after having the second one in the series given to me for Christmas. This first game is not as good as the second, some of the puzzles are a bit repetitive and the "memo" screen function is not as user friendly. Overall though good puzzles and very addictive !

This game was very fun and sometimes very challenging. I became somewhat addicted and had a hard time putting it down. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys using their brain.

As soon as the opening sequence completes and you're launched into the first (albeit easy) puzzle, you realise that Prof. Layton is an absolute legend with more charisma than Laurel AND Hardy, more intelligence than Stephen Hawking's computer and more of a hit with the ladies than a well-dressed Ron Jeremy. The voice-acting is great and story intriguing, and despite Layton's desire to spend most nights in a hotel with a young boy, he never loses his credibility.
Apart from the story, the game is almost like a series of challenging mental and word-based puzzles, rather than a murder mystery, as there is no effort required in finding clues and you are almost always told exactly where to go next in the story. However, this is no criticism - the brain activity and enjoyment the tricky puzzles induce (they range from seemingly impossible to as simple as a beaten chimp) will always keep you coming back for more. I love the game so much I only play it in short bursts because I don't want to complete it so quickly!
I would recommend people of any age to buy this game (although under 12s could struggle with the majority of puzzles), even at full price, because it is a great innovation, perfect for showing off the DS's skills as it is a hugely engrossing game - not in spite of it's simplicity, but because of it.

A game that has puzzles and critical thinking. no shooting or killing. My 8 year old is extremely bright and loved the challenge of the puzzles and of course looked to Mom and Dad for help now and then. A great gift and not mindless fluff. You won't mind your kid being glued to their DS. Recommended for kids who like a challenge as other may get frustrated.

This is a fantastic game, kept me entertained for hours. The puzzles aren't too easy but not too hard either. I like being able to download the weekly puzzles, this keeps the game current. It also links with the new professor layton. Everytime you play you notice something different, the graphics are fantastic and the story is very engaging.

I brought professer layton somehow knowing that I would be getting my money's worth and I was right!Professer layton is a great game for people who love puzzles and the only thing wrong with it is that some of the puzzles a very hard.So I'll give it a rating like this.
Cutscenes 10/10
Grafics10/10

Overall score 9/10
So with that score I end my review by saying BUY THIIS GAME!

I own Professor Layton and the Curious Village. This is one of my favorite games to play next to playing Zelda. I play on the DSi system. I'm a true puzzle gamer and if you like playing puzzle games this game is the one for you. The story line is easy to follow with a lot of intriguing plots and twists. The graphics and colors are amazing. The vast amount of puzzles that you have to solve is great. Believe me when I say, Professor Layton and the Curious Village will keep you occupied for hours. I enjoyed playing it so much that I purchased Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box as soon as it became available. To me these games represent Nintendo at their best.Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

If you haven't already tried this and you like puzzell games what have you been doing for the last 18m!!!
This is the best puzzell game ever made and with lots of side plots and hidden puzzells will keep you going for a good while. However order it with the next installment "pandoras box" or when you eventually do finish it you won't know what to do with yourself!

A risky gift for my daughter who wanted another ds game but the reviews were great for this game so when it came down in price, I bought it. It has not disappointed. It is brilliant. Very clever. appeals to kids and adults. My daughter has played it nonestop.

I bought this for my daughter but she did not seem that interested, however, I LOVE IT. Lots of little puzzles to solve & once you get into it, you can not put it down! This is definately not a game for the very young as some of the puzzles would be too difficult, but for 10yrs to 100yrs fantastic if you like solving puzzles its great, if not, you will not like this as you need to be able to solve the puzzles in order to move through the game & I can imagine that it could become very frustrating! Still playing this & will probably be purchasing the next one in the series.

The best puzzle series out there at the moment not just hidden obect puzzles but a whole range of types of varying difficulty spoils you for other puzzle games I have actually replayed it which I don't normally do when I get to the end plus if you have wi-fi set up you can get extra puzzles. I envy the Japanese apparently the third one is already out there looking forward to it. I hope it fills in some more detail of the history between the Professor and Luke.

I Think Professor Layton and the curious village is a great game and I also like Professor Layton and the diabolical box is a very good sequel to it.

I love this game so much, and it just keeps serving one great puzzle after another. The graphics are lovely, and charming, and has a great story which is easy to follow.
I highly recommend this game for the older gamer, children would struggle with this due to some complex puzzles, and the amount of reading involved.
In my opinion one of the best games for the DS, hope you find this in your stocking!

This game is another must for any DS owner to have. In short, the game is about a story of Professor Layton and his apprentice Luke out to solve a mystery involving a late baron's fortune in the town of St. Mystere.
Along your adventures you encounter puzzles, lots of them. They range from your typical logic puzzles, to visual puzzles, to some brain teasers, and word problems all of which test your skill in reasoning, viewpoint thinking, order of solving, etc. Without going into spoiling the puzzles, they gradually increase in difficulty as you go on in the story and some even had me replaying the puzzle several times to get the solution.
Fortunately, the game has a help system in the form of spending coins found throughout the game and getting tips on different ways to look at a puzzle to outright and direct clues. Some puzzles are way too easy to even think of using a hint coin but others even with the expenditures of all available hint coins for the puzzle, you are still left to scratch your head over it. The very difficult puzzles are hidden in various secret places throughout the game and are located at the very end so the game builds you up on how you are suppose to think and resolve solutions.
As you progress in the story, you are treated to in-game video animations to help tell the story and these scenes are nicely done and add to the game. These can be revisited at anytime outside of the game for repeated viewing.
As far as the design of the game is concerned, it is quite elegantly designed. You use the touch screen all the time for control, accessing your in game menu in the form of a brief case, solve puzzles, and progress. Things to do in the game outside of puzzles basically involve item collecting to piece a completed form of a painting for example or pieces for a mechanical dog which helps you later on. You can also collect various objects for the room you are staying in of which doesn't detract from the game and it isn't necessary to arrange just right for those that don't want to.
The puzzles can be revisited again if one passes up an unsolvable puzzle by going into the puzzle house or solved puzzles can be accessed in your briefcase. There is also a few bonus puzzles outside of the story progression (not puzzles hidden in the story) that are accessed if you achieve certain requirements such as decorating Layton and Luke's room to their liking. These puzzles are some of the most difficult ones I have come upon. These along with the videos, music, and various other content are in the Bonus section of the game, outside of the normal story mode.
The Wifi aspect lets you access a new puzzle each time you use it though it really unlocks a new puzzle the game already has stored inside for you to solve. Other than that, there is not much to the Wifi as the box mentions. No multiplayer or anything of the sort.
Overall, I say this is a great game to play from start to finish. If you like a good brain teaser and a charming story to envelop it all, this game is for you. There are no problems I can think of other than I look forward to the next title in Nintendo's Professor Layton series.
Cliffs
A good story with difficulty progressing puzzles in the mix.
Don't expect a list of puzzles to solve outright and select from. Expect to play out a story and along the way finding and solving puzzles.
Enough bonus content and unlockables for a puzzle DS game to play with.
Challenging and gets you thinking.

There are a ton of reviews out there that already describe what type of game this is and what the basic storyline is, so no need to rehash them here.
I enjoyed the animation and gameplay itself quite a bit. But the problem I had was that I beat it so quickly. I didn't skip any puzzles during the game either. I completed 120 of them and then finished the story. The game keeps track of how long you played, and I beat it in just over 8 hours, and a good amount of that time was spent watching cut scenes and reading nearly useless dialogue boxes. It's just not a tough game. Now, granted, there are additonal puzzles you unlock so I had a little more to do after the main story was over, but I was a little let down when I realized that I had already reached the final "stage".
The puzzles are fun, but never too hard to solve. The fun is trying to solve the puzzles while resisting the temptation to use one of your hints. I think I needed a hint or two on 5 or 6 of the puzzles, but other than it was your standard fare. A good variety though.
I'm still giving it 4 stars because the brief game itself was entertaining, and I'll check out the sequel. Not sure on the replayability yet since I just finished it, but I don't see myself coming back anytime soon. Maybe I'll wait a year and replay it after I've forgotten a lot of the story.
A good idea would have been to perhaps have a difficulty option. I was hoping to have to figure out some of the mysteries myself, but they are basically solved for you. Just way too easy.
Source: [amazon.com]
Put your thinking cap on for this one. All different kinds of puzzles to keep you going. Some easier than others. I found it a little hard to get around at first but once you catch on, it's a lot of fun.

A Kid's Review:
Professor Layton & the Curious Village is a puzzle game. You solve brainteasers to go on to the next level. The game has moments where it goes into movie mode and you can hear voices that are perfectly clear on the screen.
This is an exciting game (I still play it, and still haven't solved all of the puzzles). It requires a TON of patience and intelligence (some questions are really hard & you need time to think them over).
This game is rated E, but it has mild violence - someone is murdered and you need to catch the murderer by figuring out who it is through the puzzles and brainteasers.
Mother's Note: We rated this game 5 stars because is continues to challenge and entertain my preteens. Both females and males like the game too - a bonus.
Source: [amazon.com]
I bought this game for my 8 year old boy because he loved puzzles and brain teasers. When it got here, he played it and them my girls, ranging in age from 12-18 also wanted to play it.
They were hooked! My 18 year old daughter could not put it down & they would barter over who would get to play it next. They loved the puzzles & brain teasers. It's clearly not a game just for small kids. I have to say, my kids are smarter than me when it came to solving some of those puzzles.
The story line was very clever also (won't spoil it for you by giving too much details).
We are buying the next Professor Layton game because the whole family can enjoy it and if it matches the quality of this game, we'll be fans.
Highly recommend this for anyone wanting a quality DS game. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
